Honore-Victorin Daumier, French painter, printmaker and sculptor (French pronunciation"onoRe domeje"; 26 February 1808 - February 10 1879), was a French artist and sculptor, whose work provides a commentary on the social and political life of France, starting with the Revolution of 1830 and ending with the end of the Napoleonic Empire in 1870. Daumier wrote satires of the conduct of his fellow citizens for periodicals and newspapers throughout his entire career, and earned an income from caricatures as well as cartoons of characters from the political spectrum. He was a republican democrat who was against the bourgeoisie, the church as well as lawyers, the judiciary, politicians, and the monarchy. Following the publication of Gargantua in 1832, an unprofessional and insulting depiction of King Louis-Philippe Daumier was sentenced months of imprisonment. Daumier was also an accomplished artist. He was frequently seen at Parisian Salons but was mostly ignored dismissed by the majority of critics and French public.
