Bilbo Baggins is the protagonist and title character of J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. He also is a character supporting in The Lord of the Rings and is the fictional narrator for several of Tolkien's Middle-earth writings. Gandalf chooses the Hobbit to aid Thorin and his group of Dwarves in reclaiming their ancestral home and their treasure that was taken by the dragon Smaug. Bilbo sets out in The Hobbit timid and comfort-loving in the beginning, but through his journey develops into a valuable and resourceful participant in the quest.Bilbo's way of life in the Shire is characterized by aspects like the availability of tobacco and a postal service, recalls that of the English middle class of the Victorian to Edwardian period. This is not in line with the more traditional realm of Dwarves and Elves. Tolkien seems to have based Bilbo on the famous designer William Morris's adventures in Iceland; Morris liked his comfortable home, but developed through his arduous travels. Bilbo's journey is described as a journey of grace through which he gains wisdom and virtue as well as a journey through the mind towards completeness.
