Bettany

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE FSA was born on May 27, 1967. She is an English historian and author, who is an expert in the field of classical history. Her books cover mythology, classical antiquity as well as the historical background of Istanbul. She is a strong advocate for the teaching of classics in UK public schools. Hughes was made an OBE in the year 2019. In 2010, she spoke at the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika The Things of Love" and in 2011, she was a speaker at the Royal Television Society's Huw Wilson Memorial Lecture. She argued that the history of television is expanding and enjoying a golden era. In 2011, she was chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction, the only annual book award for fiction written by women. Hughes is a patron to The Iris Project which promotes the teaching of Latin as well as Greek in UK public schools. Classics For All is her Honorary Patron. The goal of this campaign is to restore classical languages and ancient civilisations to the state schools. She serves as an advisor to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation which seeks to promote large-scale collaboration projects between East and West
