She was a student at Howard University and began her Hollywood career with guest roles in a variety of TV shows before becoming a star with Baby Boy (2001). She played a prostitute on Hustle & Flow (2005) for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award in the category of Outstanding Performance in a Cast in a Motion Picture nomination. In 2008, she played the role of a single mom with a child who is disabled in David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) for which she was awarded Critics Choice Award, SAG Award, and Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress.
